The USA Patriot Act enhanced and expanded the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)’s existing anti-money laundering (AML) and anti-terrorism financing framework. The connection is that the Patriot Act added new requirements to the BSA, most notably by strengthening customer identification programs, prohibiting dealings with foreign shell banks, and improving information sharing between financial institutions and the government.
